Talk:Who wrote the Bible?
I think it is even more compelling (that the new testament is somewhat random) if you include what the experts say. I was taught in my Theology 101 class something very much like the internet infidels description (unfortunately, I discarded my books and don't feel like tracking down references - maybe later; assuming I remember correctly...): the new testament was compiled from writings of various, unidentifiable individuals, none of whom lived at the same time as Jesus of Nazareth. In fact, they only started committing things to writing when they realized that the end that Jesus predicted might not be coming any day now. That is something the Church never emphasized in any of the masses I was dragged to: the earliest christians thought the world would end and Jesus would return within their lifetimes.
I had Dr Landry as my professor and in trying to find the name of the textbook, I was just reminded that he was the editor and that St Thomas had its own textbook.
Of course, no amount of randomness in the writing of the bible can overcome the fact that a believer can say the process was guided by the hand of god. It might be wise to comment on the "hand of god" notion, specifically basing arguments on the many discrepancies and downright silly or evil things in the bible -- perhaps that is a separate article.
